Nanduan Village in Nuofu Township,Lancang County, bordering on Burma.used to be a Lahu ethnic village with a "matriarchal commune"social structure.According to ethnic study experts,Lallu Ethnic Group originated from ancient Qiang Nationality whose ancestors once lived in northwest China.Later, with the time passing, they gradually became independent and formed a unique nationality with their own culture.
The most important festival of the year in Nanduan Village is Spring Festival. The Day is also the beginning of Lahu's new year.On the eve of the
Spring Festival(February 2nd,2003),we arrived at the village The whole village was joyful and jubilant.Everywhere people were busy cleaning the noor, washing bed things.so the village was dotted with washed things of all colours Some people were painting their new houses In recent years, the goveminent offered three thousand yuan for each household as an allowance to improve their housing,as a result, many people had built new houses. In front
the houses, women were sewing clothes and skins for the holiday.
Visiting each other’s home on the occasion is also a good chance for Lahu yang boys and girls to fall in love.Boys will often go to the loved girl’s
home in the name of"helping with household affairs",but in fact, they want to get the favour of the girl's parents.Lahu people do not attach importance to have boys in the family, many people receive son—in—laws at home,so people generally consider that having a daughter is a luck.
The next morning, sounds of gongs and drums woke us.The procession of greeting the Mountain Deity was about to go up the mountain. We joined in the procession and walked along the tortuous path through the old forest up the mountain At last,we arrived at the Mountain Deity Temple The head presented rice, pancakes and popcorn to the Deity as the tribute Only the head himself could go into the fences to pay tribute to the Deity. Then he led other people to burn the incense and pray for prosperity and good luck of the villagers and a good harvest of the year. After this ceremony, people began to play traditional musical instrument. Some blew bamboo flutes and some others blew lusheng (a reed—pipe wind instrument)Then they danced in the rhythm of the music Their dance steps and movements expressed their good wishes that the
Deity would bring them good luck and auspiciousnessinthe new year.
After that, the head tied a white thread on every person who came here to greet the Deity. This implied the auspiciousness and well—being for the person(Lahu people take white as the lucky colour) Then they a11 danced again to their heart’s content
When they came back to the village.they believed that the Mountain Deity had been led into the village by themselves Later they would send the Deity back to the mountain.
At four o’clock in the afternoon.each family took dining—tables and all kinds of cooked food onto the village square, soon all the viIlagers, men and
women, the old and the young, happily came to the square to enjoy Lahu people。s traditional”Unity Dinner”When many people get—together to have a formal dinner.they call such an occasion。"having a Unity Diner”.which is meant to share hardship and happiness together.
In the following days after the new year,Lahu people in the village visited relatives and friends, danced and sang.enjoying their happy days of the year It was not until the ninth day of the year, when they respectfully sent the Mountain Deity back to the mountain, that they formally drew the Spring Festival to an end.And then Lahu people began a new year’s routine farming and work.
